The Smart Med Card Puts Health Information at Your Fingertips

Bob Hammill, president and founder of a Macomb Township startup, The Smart Med Card, is providing USB devices as a first-step alternative to electronic health information.

The Smart Med Card provides an affordable, safe and secure way to access vital medical information when it’s needed.

The Smart Med Card is a device born from necessity. When Hammill’s wife became increasingly ill with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, he started to carry her important medical information on a scrap sheet of paper in his wallet. After his wife was rushed to the hospital in December 2008, both EMT’s and physicians commented on Hammill’s ingenuity, and the idea for The Smart Med Card was born.

The Smart Med Card has two options far more convenient than a scrap of paper -- a durable wallet-sized card and stylish bracelet, both with USB computer storage on board.

The Smart Med Card allows people to carry their electronic health records with them, which means a medical professional or family member can easily access vital health information via computer. In addition, users can access their information in an easy-to-read, password-protected online health profile.

Along with a person’s name, address, phone number, primary care physician and emergency contact information, each portable device can save up to 10 medications, including dosages and frequencies, as well as current health conditions and allergies. These comprehensive details are crucial to preventing allergic reactions and incompatible medical treatments. In addition, each The Smart Med Card option can hold information on the users durable power of attorney and living will, as well as x-rays, medical imaging and much more.
